1. Passport Requirements

  • Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from New Zealand (or 1 month if the issuing country has a representative office in NZ).
  • It should have at least one blank page for entry stamps.
  • Machine-readable passports are required for visa-exempt entry and NZeTA.
  • Passport must not be damaged or expired – immigration officers can refuse entry.

2. Visa or NZeTA – What You Need Depends on Your Nationality

New Zealand offers visa exemption with NZeTA for visa-waiver countries or visa-free entry for some.

    → Apply online for a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) before travel.

    → Cost: NZD 17 (app) or NZD 23 (online) + IVL (International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy) NZD 100.
    → Valid for 2 years (multiple entries), stay up to 3 months per visit (6 months for UK citizens).
    → Processing: usually instant or within 72 hours.

  • Visa-free nationalities (unlimited / special conditions): Australia (Australian citizens and permanent residents – citizens unlimited stay, permanent residents special conditions and NZeTA not required for citizens).

    → No NZeTA or visa required for Australian citizens.
    → Australian permanent residents must apply for NZeTA if not otherwise exempt.

    → Cost: NZD 246–500+ depending on type.
    → Stay: up to 9 months (usually 3–6 months granted).

3. Length of Stay

  • NZeTA / visa waiver: up to 3 months per visit (6 months for UK citizens) – multiple entries within validity.
  • Visitor visa: up to 9 months (extensions possible if justified, e.g. medical/family; apply online before expiry).
  • You cannot work or study long-term without separate visas/permits (e.g. Working Holiday, Student Visa).
  • Frequent visa runs may lead to refusal or visa cancellation.

4. Other Important Requirements

  • Proof of onward/return ticket — almost always checked at check-in and immigration.
  • Proof of sufficient funds (~NZD 1,000 per month) and accommodation — frequently requested.
  • No COVID-19 vaccination, testing, or quarantine required (rules fully removed since 2022).
  • Customs & biosecurity: Declare cash over NZD 10,000, restricted items (food, plants, honey, wood, medicines, weapons, etc.). Strict rules – complete NZTD online before arrival.
  • Fingerprinting & photo: taken on arrival for most non-New Zealand nationals.

  • Apply for NZeTA + pay IVL at least 72 hours before departure – it’s mandatory for visa-waiver travelers.
  • Complete the NZ Traveller Declaration (NZTD) online up to 24 hours before arrival via travellerdeclaration.govt.nz – required for all arrivals.
